A base should be a safe place for you to return/teleport to so you can create ammo & heals, upgrade weapons, store items, and rest. Once you have enough Steel and Scrap, you can create a home base. If you don't want to read all that, then the recommended skills to get are dodge chance and extra healing to start, then past level 10, "Double Dragon" rank 2, and increased ammo/material capcity. Now I get three uses out of my veggies: eating the good parts, saving the scraps to make tasty broth, and composting the scraps after cooking the broth. I figured that was definitely preferable to sending them to the landfill, but then I started developing a vegan pho recipe for my website and found out just how easy it is to make homemade broths using the scraps I would normally just toss out. For a long time, I'd just toss all my veggie scraps into the compost.
